Why Businessses Buy Art

There could be a myriad of reasons why companies buy art but let me list the most common: they need to get rid of the bare, blank walls; they want to make the offices more pleasant and inviting to the people who work there; they don't want to look like they just moved in or are about to move out; they hope the art will say something unique and special about the company that will fit with their marketing goals; there is a particular theme they like that they feel works with the product they create or the service they give; they like being part of the larger community and feel a need to support local artists; they choose to gain stature and publicity for a corporate art collection they will amass.

These are all good reasons and important ones at that. However, not everyone can afford artwork and not everyone sees the need. But times are changing. When I first started designing art programs for companies in Southern California in the early 1980's, many executives had to be convinced that art was more than just another company expense. Even today it is still considered a luxury, and in an economic downturn, acquisition of art is usually placed on a back burner. Executives need to realize that art will have a great, positive benefit to their company. While much of it is subliminal, artwork (or more specifically, the lack of artwork) could just be driving clients away.

When a client or prospect enters a business facility, they want to feel that the company is there to stay. They don't want to have to wonder if they will be gone tomorrow or next week or next month. Companies that endlessly function with bare walls send a silent but very powerful negative message to all who enter. When the decor is incomplete, the visitor can't feel comfortable. They might not be able to express their discomfort, but it is there none-the-less. For this reason alone, every company should strive to create the most attractive and complete work environment they can - it just may mean the difference between survival and failure.

We need more people who would enjoy becoming a corporate art consultant. It's a fascinating, prestigious career that brings a high degree of creativity, challenge and variety with it. For more information, click below.
